The Star Trek franchise desperately wants to be more like its younger, sexier, more lucrative cousin, Star Wars. This isn't a new notion. It was an accusation leveled at the shiny J.J. Abrams reboot movies in 2009 and 2012 — right before Abrams, a Star Wars fan as a kid, dumped Trek directing to go helm The Force Awakens.
In the case of Star Trek: Discovery, which returned for its second season on CBS' streaming service Thursday night, it isn't just a game of spot the similarities. New showrunner Alex Kurtzman has invited comparison by just coming right out and saying it: he wants more Wars in his Trek. Nonton twilight new moon saga sub indo.
Check out the functionality in different browsers, because the same content appears differently when dropped. Something to watch out for in the future.
'I go back to my childhood and Luke Skywalker, the farm boy who looks out at the twin suns of Tatooine,' Kurtzman told THR earlier this month, explaining why he wanted to bring in younger audiences. 'Trek never gave me that .. it was never aspirational that way.'

In its first season, Discovery managed to avoid the comparison — largely because its changing parade of showrunners seemed to be throwing everything at the wall to see what stuck. (Was it Game of Thrones with Klingons? Doctor Who lite? A trippy parallel universe adventure?) There were a few Star Wars-like touches in the mix — an evil Emperor who has a complicated relationship with our hero here, a planetary genocide there.
But that troubled first season also ended with the most old school Trek fandom-pleasing moment possible: Discovery encounters the Enterprise, commanded by Captain Kirk predecessor Christopher Pike (Anson Mount). We also learned the show had cast a young Spock for Season 2. It doesn't get more back-to-your-roots than that, right?
But by the midpoint of episode 1, Pike and our protagonist Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) were piloting one-person craft with X-shaped wings .. through a fast-moving asteroid belt. My Trek-loving wife couldn't stand it. 'They've turned it into Star Wars!' she exclaimed unhappily.
Suddenly I couldn't stop seeing or hearing homages. A lighthearted scene with a sneezing alien in the elevator could have come straight from a Cantina. Pike and Burnham land on an asteroid where a stranded scientist (Tig Notaro, in one of the episode's better performances) has constructed floating drone 'children'; they sounded like the floating torture droid on the original Death Star and looked like Boba Fett's ship. Notaro's base also had that dirty, lived-in, 'used universe' feeling Star Wars pioneered.
And as for young Spock, Burnham's adopted brother, seen only in flashbacks in this episode? Well, there's nothing more Star Wars-y than a prequel that gives you the backstory of a character you never asked for. From the trailers it appears Spock has had troubling visions of a 'red angel,' which sounds like the kind of thing that would afflict denizens of the Force-filled galaxy far, far away; a supremely logical science officer, not so much.
None of this would matter if Kurtzman had remembered to transport over the most important element from the Star Wars franchise: a solid story tightly told. Instead, the Discovery premiere offered more of the same kind of ADD that plagued Season 1. It offered a mish-mash of stories, never focusing on one long enough to satisfy.
The Spock backstory came with a lot of stylish slow-motion visuals of candles and petals on Vulcan, but didn't give us much substance beyond 'kid Spock was a bit of a meanie once!' Asteroid-dodging was sort of the point of the episode until it wasn't. Notaro's scientist has one great introduction scene, is brought aboard, then vanishes. Burnham casually discovers what we're told could be a new energy source for the galaxy, and we get five minutes about that.
Meanwhile,
I look forward to finding out what Discovery wants to be when it grows up, even if that thing is an echo of Star Wars. Because right now the show is still just a farm kid standing on Tatooine staring at a double sunset, with too many different half-baked dreams filling its head for it to truly achieve greatness.
